In men, the face is one of the areas that are most exposed to environmental influences. These have a negative impact on the skin of the face. They intensify the natural aging process and, in some cases, leave deep marks. With a facelift, the facial skin is tightened, and sunken areas of the face are filled again, making your appearance rejuvenated by years. If desired, the treatment can even be extended to the forehead and neck to enhance the effect. In a joint consultation, Dr. Matiasek explains in detail all aspects of the facelift and creates an individual treatment plan for you.

What are the reasons for a facelift for men?

It is difficult to prevent wrinkles on a man’s face. In addition to various environmental influences, an unhealthy diet or habits such as smoking, and the consumption of alcohol also promote the formation of wrinkles. Likewise, stress often leaves deep marks on a man’s face. Anyone who is frequently confronted with stress in everyday life or at work quickly develops so-called expression lines. Such a lifestyle often leads to facial skin losing tension and thus sagging. A facelift is only possible if there is excess skin; a consultation will clarify whether a facelift makes sense in your case or not.

As a man, what do I have to consider before a facelift?

Preparing for a procedure such as a facelift begins some time before the actual procedure. A detailed consultation takes place before a facelift. After examining the complexion of the skin, it will be determined which method is best suited to achieve the result you want. This conversation will also cover previous illnesses, medications you are taking, and allergies you suffer from. A facelift is only an option for physically healthy patients over the age of 18.

In the course of the conversation, an appointment for treatment will be set and the next steps will be discussed. In order to reduce the risk associated with such an operation, it is strongly advised to stop consuming nicotine and alcohol at least one week before the operation. During this period, you should generally take care of your body – in this way you can make sure that your body has all reserves available for wound healing after the procedure.

The use of blood-thinning medication may need to be stopped prior to the procedure. These include aspirin, Voltaren, Marcoumar and Thomypyrin. If you take sleeping pills, stop taking them before the procedure. The use of blood-thinning medication may need to be stopped prior to the procedure. How does a facelift work for a man?

Depending on the extent of the facelift, the procedure is carried out either under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. Before the procedure, the facial skin is cleaned and disinfected. If you have a beard, you will unfortunately have to shave it off before the procedure.

Depending on the extent of the wrinkles and the desired result, different methods are available for a face lift. In the case of strong wrinkles and sagging facial skin, previous contours can be restored with a classic face lift, the so-called SMAS method. This requires a cut from the hairline in the area of the temples to behind the ear. How long the incision actually is depends on the extent of the wrinkles. Additional incisions, for example in the forehead area, may also be necessary. The excess skin is removed, and the wound is sutured so that the skin is not under tension.

With a vertical facelift, on the other hand, the facial skin is not pulled up sideways, but vertically. This method is particularly suitable for sagging cheeks and eyebrows. The forehead, temples and wrinkles around the mouth area can also be pulled up. The use of a scalpel is no longer absolutely necessary for a vertical facelift. Thanks to modern surgical techniques, the lifting can be carried out using an endoscope. However, this method is only an option if the wrinkling has not yet progressed too far.

A mini facelift, also known as a MACS lift, requires particularly small skin incisions, which is why the wound heals faster than a classic facelift. With this method, however, only the cheek area and chin area can be tightened. A mini facelift does not require an incision on the back of the head, but this also means that the tightening effect is slightly less than with a classic facelift. A mini facelift is therefore primarily an option for patients whose skin aging has not progressed too far or if the skin is only slightly slack.

Fine wrinkles around the mouth or eyelids cannot be removed with a face lift. If rejuvenation is also desired in this area, the combination with other invalid or minimally invasive methods can bring the desired effect. It is possible to use Botox, hyaluronic acid or autologous fat transfer.

What complications can a man suffer with a facelift?

Like any other procedure, a facelift is associated with certain risks. However, the risk of complications associated with a facelift is low. In the first few days after the procedure, there may be bruises or swelling – these are harmless and usually go away without the need for treatment. In rare cases, patients report poor skin sensitivity in the first days after the procedure. But the skin sensations usually also return after a short time. General surgical risks such as wound healing disorders, secondary bleeding or wound infections are also possible. Please make sure to keep the agreed appointments for the check-ups. For most patients, the lift is completely without complications. After about one to two weeks, you can continue with your everyday life as usual.

As a man, what do I have to consider before a facelift?

After a facelift, you will need to wear a bandage for two to three days. In some cases, swelling or light bruising occurs after a facelift, but these will go away within a few days. In the time immediately after the procedure, physical rest is called for. Refrain from sporting activities, sunlight, solarium and sauna during the healing phase. Limit the consumption of alcohol and nicotine to an absolute minimum, as these have a negative effect on wound healing.

About a week to ten days after the procedure, you will come back to the practice for a follow-up examination and to remove the sutures. After the sutures have been removed, you can start with the scar treatment; lymphatic drainage can also support the healing process. We would be happy to advise you on optimal scar care. You will be fully operational again around two to four weeks after the procedure.

As a man, what results can I expect from a facelift?

A face lift for men reduces the signs of the times and gives you a fresh and relaxed facial expression. After the procedure, you will appear more vital and determined. Depending on the extent of the operation, it can take several months until the final result of the facelift is achieved. Men are estimated to appear seven to ten years younger on average after a facelift than they were before the procedure. But even a facelift cannot stop the aging process of the skin. Smaller wrinkles persist even after the procedure – this means that your natural facial expressions are retained. If you had a complete removal of all wrinkles, your face would appear mask-like after the procedure.

Although the result of a facelift is permanent, the skin continues to age naturally. It may therefore be useful to repeat the procedure after about ten years.

Numerous facelift techniques have been developed over the years. In a detailed consultation, Dr. Matiasek will clarify with you which one suits you and your ideas best.
