With increasing age, the natural aging process of the skin progresses – the neck is also affected by the aging of the skin. The skin increasingly loses its elasticity and sags. In addition, more fat is deposited, and wrinkles appear. Many patients are bothered by their so-called “turkey neck” and would like a change in order to be able to feel good in their skin again. With a neck lift and a neck lift, such signs of aging can be remedied with little risk and you can enjoy a taut and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

When is a neck lift used?

A neck lift is usually used for aesthetic problems. The skin becomes increasingly slack with age, tissue sags, wrinkles appear, and excess fat often forms. This is perceived by patients as an aesthetic flaw, especially in the neck area; especially if the neck looks older than the face, for example. Many want a change and want to feel good in their bodies, which is why they decide to have a neck lift.

A tightening of the neck is possible if excess fatty tissue has deposited on the neck and in the area of the lower chin area leading to the formation of wrinkles. With a neck lift, the smooth and healthy contours of the neck and jaw can be restored.

Whether a neck lift leads to the desired result depends on each individual case. A pronounced double chin, larger fat deposits on the neck with irregularly protruding fat pads or a so-called turkey neck, which is characterized by deep vertical folds on the neck, can be treated with a neck lift. If wrinkles on the face are also to be treated as part of the neck lift, the combination with a facelift makes sense. In terms of the incision, Dr. Matiasek optimally combines both procedures and thus reduces scarring to a minimum.

Who is a neck lift suitable for?

In principle, a neck lift is suitable for all patients who are dissatisfied with the look of their neck and would like a change. Since the aging of the skin leaves clearly visible traces in advanced age, the majority of patients are also over 50 years old. However, a neck lift is of course also possible under the age of 50, as the skin on the neck can lose a lot of elasticity even at a young age. There are two basic requirements for a neck lift: You must be over 18 years old and in good health.

A neck lift is suitable for patients who want firm and smooth skin in the neck area. During this procedure, fine lines and wrinkles are significantly reduced, the jaw area appears more defined again, stubborn fat deposits can be removed, and the proportions of the face brought back into balance. After such an operation, patients can appear up to ten years younger again.

What do I have to consider before the neck lift?

Before a neck lift, there is a detailed consultation with Dr. Matiasek instead. He examines the skin on the neck to decide whether a tightening is possible and which method can be used to achieve the best result. This conversation will also cover pre-existing medical conditions, medications you are taking, and any allergies you suffer from. A neck lift is only possible for physically healthy patients.

In the course of the conversation, you will also set an appointment for the treatment and discuss how to proceed. Stop consuming alcohol and nicotine at least a week before the procedure. During this period, you should generally take care of your body – in this way you make sure that your body has all its reserves available for wound healing after the procedure.

The use of blood-thinning medication may need to be stopped prior to the procedure. These include aspirin, Voltaren, Marcoumar and Thomypyrin. If you take sleeping pills, stop taking them before the procedure. The use of blood-thinning medication may need to be stopped prior to the procedure. How does a neck lift work?

A neck lift takes around two to five hours. The length of time depends primarily on which technique is used and how pronounced the wrinkles are on the patient’s neck. There are different methods of neck lift. The Platysma neck lift and the SMAS neck lift are used particularly frequently. In the case of a double chin or other fat deposits in the neck area, liposuction is usually the method of choice.

SMAS stands for Superficial Muscular Aponeurosis System and describes the layers to be tightened. While conventional lifting only removes excess skin, this method also tightens the superficial muscle and connective tissue. A cut behind the ear and/or the hairline is used to detach the superficial layers from one another, tighten the skin and remove excess tissue. In placing the sutures, this method can achieve a particularly natural-looking result. Unlike a conventional face lift, the result lasts longer. Dr. Matiasek has also achieved very good results with patients with very slack skin.

With the platysma neck lift, on the other hand, the incision is made below the chin to gain access to the platysma muscle. For most people, this muscle, which extends from the chest area to the face, is largely without function. But it is related to the wrinkles on the neck. Thanks to a special suture technique, these wrinkles disappear and the skin on the neck is tightened. This method is particularly suitable for patients who suffer from a double chin or a turkey neck. However, severely slack skin with transverse wrinkles can only be tightened to a limited extent with this method.

An elastic bandage is applied after the procedure. If necessary, a thin tube is also attached through which wound fluid can drain. This drainage will be removed after a day or two – then you can go home. General anesthesia is usually not necessary for a neck lift. Depending on the size of the surgery, the neck lift is performed under local or general anesthesia. Discuss the type of anesthesia with Dr. Matiasek in the consultation, so that you are optimally prepared for the procedure.

What are the complications and risks of a neck lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure – certain complications are therefore always possible, but the risk is low. Bruising and swelling are normal in the first few weeks after the procedure and are completely harmless. Some patients report less skin sensitivity in the neck area after the procedure. Normally, the usual skin sensations return on their own within a short time. The occurrence of wound seeping after an extensive neck lift can be prevented with special bandages. General surgical risks such as wound healing disorders, secondary bleeding or wound infections are also possible. For most patients, the procedure is completely without complication. After about one to two weeks, you can continue with your everyday life as usual.

What do I have to consider after the neck lift?

Compared to other wrinkle treatments, a thread lift is considered to be extremely low risk. Slight swelling or bruises often appear immediately after the treatment. However, these are nothing to worry about and will go away on their own within a day or two. Since it is clarified in advance in the consultation whether you suffer from an intolerance to the materials used, allergic reactions are as good as impossible. You don’t have to worry about infections either, as Dr. Matiasek adheres to the highest quality and hygiene standards in his ordinations. In the period immediately after a neck lift, it is important that you take care of your body. Depending on your professional activity, it makes sense to take sick leave for one to two weeks so that your body can relax in peace. Avoid sporting activities for the first four to six weeks – sunlight, solarium and sauna are also taboo for the time being. The consumption of alcohol and nicotine can have a negative effect on wound healing, which is why you should keep both to a minimum. Make sure to keep the agreed appointments for the check-ups so that Dr. Matiasek can observe the healing process and control the success of the treatment.

When are the results of the neck lift visible?

As soon as the swelling subsides after the operation, the result of the neck lift will also be visible. There is an improvement in the neck contour and the jaw is now more beautifully defined. In the initial period after the procedure, a scar is visible on the neck, but it fades over time. After about two to three months, the final result of the lifting will be visible.

After such a procedure, your neck will keep its youthful appearance for at least five to ten years. Especially patients who eat healthily and conscientiously use a high level of sun protection can enjoy the taut neck contours for many years.
